Need More Storage? Try These Handy Space-Saving Solutions

Posted on 22/11/2016

Are the residents of the UK becoming a bunch of secret hoarders? With Brits buying more gadgetry than ever before and the world becoming even more materialistic with every new advance in technology it raises the question of where are we putting all this extra stuff?

Everybody unintentionally collects clutter to an extent hoarding the likes of papers, clothes, collectables, furniture and whatever else. But what do you do when you run out of valuable space in your home? How do you make room for visitors or an expanding family when there is nothing but clutter dominating every corner of your household. The ideal solution for some would be to have a de-cluttering clear out or a spring clean, but is that the only option?

Lift Up
If you are one of those people who has too much clutter on the floor and ornaments at eye level, installing a few shelves is a perfect way to help to brighten up a room. They’re available in various styles and colours and not only will they enable you to remove items from the floor it is a savvy and trendy way to keep treasured items out of harm’s way as well as keeping them on display.

Clever Storage
When your wardrobe and chest of drawers are overflowing, try plastic storage boxes available from Ikea, Argos and other high street stores. They come in a wide variety of sizes and colours, the flatter ones make under-the-bed storage easily accessible. They are ideal for stacking on top of one another as an excellent and practical storage solution and they can be placed in cupboards and wardrobes. Also the smaller ones are just right for storing trinkets and odd bits and pieces. Another clever trick is vacuum bags, which are great for storing anywhere and readily available to buy. Just pop whatever you need inside, zip them up and use the pipe attachment of a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air and compress the bag.

Clear Out
How much stuff has your house accumulated over the years? Could it be time for a proper clear out? If you can face the gruelling task of having to sift through your belongings and decide which ones you could do without, it’ll be worth it. Recycle your old stuff by giving your belongings to charity or family and friends. You can sell your stuff at a car boot sale or even on an internet auction site like eBay, or advertising sites like Gumtree and Loot. If you would rather hang on to some of your treasured bits and bobs give old clothes a makeover, customise them to make original pieces, polish and re-use old furniture. A sewing machine, wood cleaner and a few sequins can go a long way.

Utilise Your Space
If you feel you have wasted space in your home, change the furniture around to give a room a new lease of life. If you’re unsure how to do this research the Chinese art of Feng Shui, which will advise you on how to get positive energy flowing through your home. If your house has any half-finished DIY projects outstanding stop procrastinating and make a point to finish them. Make room in those chaotic cupboards and garden sheds for your new storage system and if you have kids get them helping too. With the constant pressures of work and family it can be too easy to let things pile on top of us at home, but thankfully with a little attentiveness and re-organisation you will have a more comfortable and systematic home.
