Minimise your Watford Storage Space by Getting Rid of Unwanted Items

Posted on

Making use of storage during a relocation can be a great way to take some of the pressure off when moving, and give you time to get things sorted at your new Watford home before picking up additional stored items. However, hiring storage space Watford can get expensive very quickly, so it makes sense to find ways of making the most out of the space you have hired.

A common mistake that is made is to simply place all kinds of old or unwanted goods into storage alongside things that you want to move to your new home. The problem with doing this is that you will need more storage space, and so may end up having to pay to a storage company as a result. Also, once you’ve begun unpacking at your new home, you’ll the added hassle of having to find space for items and goods that may not even be used, thus taking up valuable room that could be used for something else.

The best way to make sure that you are maximising your use of hired storage space is to plan ahead. Once you have a date set for your move, go through all the old and unwanted items you have in the house. Once you know how much stuff you can get rid of, you can start looking in detail at what items are still in sellable condition, what you might want to give away, and what is no longer in working order.

If you can, it’s always preferable to try and sell your old items. A good way to do this is to check your local area, and even the Watford area, to see what car boot sales or fetes are running, and go and set up a stall. The added bonus of doing this in Watford is that you can also get to know the area a little better and meet some people before you move.

Other alternatives include selling things online with eBay and internet classified sites. You can also place classifieds in the local paper, and stick signs up at local shops – this will be a lot cheaper than a local paper, but you may not have as much success. By doing all this well in advance, you should hopefully have not only got rid of your unwanted items, but also generated a fair amount of additional income that can be used to further reduce Watford storage costs, or contribute to other elements of your move.

If moving day is slowly approaching and you’re having trouble selling some things off, then think carefully about what you want to do with them. Ideally, adding them to storage with your more valued items should be a last resort, and simply donating these items to charity might be the best course of action. You will know that your unwanted items will be given a new home and do contribute to a good cause at the very least. If you are set on getting a sale though, and think it is worth keeping the item until one is made, then adding a few odds and ends to your storage space is often not too much of a problem, unless they are very large items. Use your discretion, but remember that in order to cut storage costs you will have to make compromises and be fairly cut throat about what can be kept and what needs to go.
